Bringing a puppy home is an exciting adventure, but the initial few weeks can be a challenge! Here are my top 4 tips for toilet training your new puppy:
1. Establish a Routine: Take your puppy out first thing in the morning, after meals, before bedtime & as soon as they wake up & as soon as they stop a play session .
Consistency is key!
2. Choose a Designated Spot: In the beginning using the same spot outside can help cue them to recognize that is where they are to toilet. The familiar scent can encourage them to go.
3. Use Positive Reinforcement: Praise and reward your puppy with treats or play immediately after they do their business outside. This helps them associate going outside with positive outcomes!
4. Watch for Signs: Keep an eye out for signs that your puppy needs to go, such as sniffing, circling, or whining. React quickly to prevent accidents. If your puppy has an accident indoors, donāt scold them. Instead, clean up thoroughly to remove any lingering smells.
Getting the timing right.
Your puppy needs to learn the connection between going outside and going to the toilet.
To teach this, you need to understand your puppy’s toilet triggers and take him outside to the correct place to relieve himself.
A common toilet trigger that is often missed is after periods of excitement.
Some examples of this are :
*People coming into the home
* Interacting with something new
*Visual or Audible trigger that causes stimulation.
The early warning signs that most dogs need to go to the bathroom include circling or pacing, and appearing restless.
When you suspect your dog needs to go out, encourage him to come into the garden with you and take him to the same spot each time.
Give him a command such as “Toilet ” or ā pee pee ā and wait with your dog. Then, give enthusiastic praise as soon as he has finished.
If your dog shows no signs of needing to go, take him back indoors.
During this time, it’s important to supervise your dog to ensure that he doesn’t have the chance to make a mistake. If your dog starts to circle or pace, interrupt the behavior, then quickly encourage him to go to the designated area.
Never scold or punish your dog if you’ve allowed him to make a mistake. Punishment of any kind may delay house training and harm your relationship with your dog.
Every puppy learns at their own pace. Stay calm, patient, and consistent!
